When does a Labradoodle's coat begin to shed and how do I care for it?

A Labradoodle's coat shedding is an important stage in grooming . Around 6 to 10 months of age, the soft puppy coat transforms into an adult, often denser and curlier coat. This entire period lasts about a year. This creates an increased risk of tangles and even felting if the coat is not properly maintained.

During shedding, it's essential to maintain a consistent routine to keep your Labradoodle comfortable and its coat healthy.

Follow these steps in the correct order:

1. Blow the coat with a water blower to remove dirt and loose hair and to reveal tangles.
2. Brushing : Use a good brush (such as the Activet ) to carefully brush the coat.
3. Comb : Use a rake to check if you can comb through the coat without resistance. No resistance = no tangles.
4. Washing : Use a mild, well-cleansing, preferably natural shampoo specifically for Labradoodle coats.
5. Conditioner : Apply a nourishing conditioner to keep the coat soft and combable.
6. Drying with a blower: Blow the coat dry gently, without fanning it.
7. Combing : Finally, check the entire coat again with a rake for any remaining tangles.

Good preparation and regular adherence to these steps will prevent matting and ensure your Labradoodle looks fresh, tangle-free, and well-groomed. Need help choosing the right products or want to learn this process in a video ? Then check out our webshop or online training courses.
