Doodle Ear Care: Dos and Don'ts

Ear disorders are common in this blog I tell more about how to best care for your dog or cat's ears.
Traumapet ear drops are Traumapet's most popular products. They receive many positive reviews daily from pet owners who have finally solved a long-term problem with them. In my salon, I also regularly get questions about the best way to care for ears.
The anatomy of the animal ear

The animal ear, like the human ear, consists of several parts. The outer ear, or auricle , is made of skin and cartilage. The auditory canal is a small tube that runs from the auricle to the eardrum . The eardrum serves as a barrier between the outer ear and the middle ear .
How do I care for the auricle?
The parts of the ear that you can care for yourself are the auricle and the ear canal .
Depending on the breed, there can be significant differences in the shape and structure of the auricle. Another important characteristic that varies by breed is hair growth, so often our sweet doodles also have this characteristic.
It's advisable to trim long hairs from the inside of the auricle to prevent dirt buildup. This makes the ear easier to inspect, and excess earwax and redness are more readily visible. The ear can also breathe better and stay moist. You can trim the hair yourself with round-tipped scissors, or you can have it done at a grooming salon. I teach clients in my salon how to do this themselves.
For irritation in the auricle, you can use Traumapet skin cream . The soothing and anti-inflammatory effect of silver can reduce itching and the urge to scratch. The beeswax in the skin cream helps repair the skin.
For minor wounds on the auricle, such as bite wounds or tears, it's best to use Traumapet wound gel . This treats open wounds and prevents inflammation and infection. The water-based gel allows for moist wound healing, which accelerates recovery.

How do I care for the ear canal?

Once the hair is trimmed short, you can also see inside the ear canal more clearly. Is there any earwax or dirt buildup? Then you can gently remove it with, for example, our Aromacare earwipes.
Using a cotton swab to clean the ear canal is not recommended, as it can cause irritation. Only when all visible dirt and earwax have been removed can you begin administering ear drops. It's recommended to instill 10 to 20 drops into the ear canal and then massage them in.
  1. First, remove any dirt or foreign objects from the ear canal.
  2. Fill the ear canal with the ear drops and gently massage them in. The exact number of drops isn't important; it's important to use enough to remove excess earwax. On average, this is about 10-20 drops.
  3. Give your pet the opportunity to shake its head (be careful with a white wall, the drops will be brown).
  4. Remove earwax and excess eardrops with a tissue.

Summary: Clean first, then drip!

Whether you want to treat the auricle or the ear canal, this rule always applies: first remove dirt, foreign objects (such as grass awns) and excess earwax.
For the auricle, use TraumaPet Skin Cream. If there are any wounds, use TraumaPet wound gel. For the ear canal, you can use ear drops.
TraumaPet Ear Drops can be given preventively as a cleaner or in case of active complaints.
  • Preventative: 1 to 2 times a week, instill 10 to 20 drops into the ears.
  • For active complaints: 1 to 2 times a day, 10 to 20 drops.
