When should you take your Labradoodle to the grooming salon for the first time?

One of the most frequently asked questions from new Doodle owners: "When should I take my Labradoodle to the groomer for the first time?" And that's not surprising; there's so much information out there, and often it's contradictory.

As a Doodle specialist, I understand that hesitation completely. You want to do it right, without overwhelming your puppy. That's why you'll find a calm, clear step-by-step plan below that tells you exactly when you can start having your Labradoodle groomed, clipped , and acclimated to the grooming salon .

The first meeting: around 10 weeks

You really don't have to wait for the first "big grooming session." The time beforehand is incredibly important . Plan a short introduction at the grooming salon around 10 weeks of age; about 15 minutes is enough. This way, your puppy learns through play that a grooming salon isn't scary. It smells different, there are unfamiliar tools, and there's often a table your dog will have to stand on.

During such a first visit:

  • Can your Doodle sniff around for a bit?
  • you get to know the groomer
  • you will receive an explanation of the next steps

This way you can lay a calm foundation together for the future.

From 12 to 14 weeks: learning through play

After the initial introduction, it is a good idea to schedule a short practice session once a month .
This could be a wash and dry session , or a mini session where your puppy stands on the table for a while, gets brushed and is introduced to the sounds of the hairdryer or water blower.

These so-called “getting used to sessions” help to:

  • to build trust
  • to get used to touch and sounds quietly
  • and make trimming smooth later

A Labradoodle that has positive experiences from an early age will later be relaxed and confident at the table.

The first real trim: between 5.5 and 6 months

Schedule the first full grooming session between 5.5 and 6 months . That's when your Doodle is old enough to stand still on the table for a while. Such a session can easily take 2 to 2.5 hours, sometimes even 3. That's a lot for a young puppy, so starting earlier is usually too strenuous.

During this first proper grooming session, the coat is thoroughly treated: washing, drying, combing, and clipping . After all the practice sessions, this won't feel like anything new to your Doodle anymore; and that's precisely the goal.

And at home? That's where it all starts too

In between visits, there are lots of things you can do at home to help your puppy get used to things.
Use the tips you get from the grooming salon and practice quietly for a few minutes every day:

  • clean the eyes
  • brush the legs and head briefly
  • put your puppy on the table for a while, so that it becomes a habit
  • let him get used to the water blower, without pressure

Everything is done playfully and with plenty of patience. This way, you'll help your Doodle in a fun and safe way, and you'll prevent him from becoming anxious or experiencing stress during grooming later on .
